Automotive PhD Students Win Best Theory Paper Prize at IEEE ICIT 2024

Doctoral Researchers from the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering take home “Best Theory Paper” at the recent 25th Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT) 2024 for their work on mitigating the global energy crisis and facilitative a net-zero and clean growth society.

The annual conference brought together researchers from across the world in the fields of intelligent and computer control systems, robotics, factory communications and automation, flexible manufacturing, data acquisition and signal processing, vision systems, and power electronics.

In total, the IEEE ICIT 2024 received a total of 436 submissions from 33 countries and regions and awarded four best paper prizes including:

  • Best Conference Paper
  • Best Application Paper
  • Best Theory Paper
  • Best Student Paper

Automotive PhD students Yimeng Li, Xinming Wang, Jinhao Liu and James McGeary guided by Dr Jun Yang were awarded the “Best Theory Paper” Prize for their paper “A Formal Finite-Control-Set Control Approach for PMSM Drives under Disturbances.”

Their paper proposes a formal finite-control-set control method based on the control Lyapunov function for permanent magnet synchronous motors with disturbances. The unique feature of the proposed method is that the formal stability of a closed-loop system with discrete control inputs in the presence of disturbances is rigorously guaranteed.

The work contributes to next generation of high-performance electric drive control algorithms that is significant to improve power quality and energy conversion efficiency of electric vehicles, renewable energy systems and industrial robots. Thus, to mitigate the global energy crisis and climate change and facilitate a net-zero and clean growth society.

Dr Yang’ comments:

This award is a high recognition of over a decade of research work of the team in the modelling, estimation, optimization and control of power electronics, machines and drives. It also serves as a significant encouragement for the PhD students and researchers in the team to perform high-quality research work.

In the future, the team will continue to delve into the exploration of the integration and optimization control of electric vehicle systems using these cutting-edge methods.
