Research at LUSAD
Research in the School ranges from pure research mainly centred on conceptually driven fine art practice and the development of experimental writing and high level theory, to ‘applied’ research where design work leads toward industrial/commercial applications and professional commissions. In addition we are undertaking ‘developmental‘ art and design research into pedagogy, and the development of resources for other researchers. Particular sphere of interest include Contemporary Art and Theory, Drawing, Textile Design, Photography, Animation, Art in the Public Sphere, and Design History. To support this research we have various Research Groups, which are an integral part of our research culture as they include both staff, students and research fellows.
Our postgraduate provision is growing through the MAs we offer (Art and Design, 2D/3D Visualisation) and the great possibilities for PhD study. We already have an excellent cohort of students and are always happy to discuss potential new research projects that relate to the research undertaken here at LUSAD.
We are always happy to talk with other potential partners, whether academic, commercial or industrial and would welcome approaches for joint projects and research links. Please contact the Director of Research in the first instance.

Research success in Loughborough
Loughborough submitted over 94% of its academic staff for assessment as part of the 2008 RAE – a rise of around 16% from the last RAE in 2001 and one of the highest returns of any university in the country.
Every department was found to be undertaking research that is internationally recognised, with 18% of the University’s research considered to be ‘world leading’.
Loughborough’s research across six departments was assessed as the best in the UK. A further three departments were assessed as being in the top five in the country.
Ten departments have over 20% of their research judged to be ‘world leading’.
Loughborough has made outstanding progress since 2001. The Times Higher Education magazine named Loughborough as one of three rising stars among research-intensive universities and the online specialist newspaper Research Fortnight has placed Loughborough 23rd, a rise of nine places from 2001.
70% of the Department’s research is of an international standard (rated 2*, 3* or 4*) in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.
