Welcome to the Research Pages of the Department of Civil & Building Engineering at Loughborough University.
The focal point of the Department is its innovative, industry-relevant research and postgraduate training. We have an outstanding record of doctoral supervision - on average, a student graduates with a PhD from the Department every two weeks.
The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), published in December, have confirmed Loughborough as one of the country's leading research universities. Loughborough submitted over 94% of its academic staff for assessment as part of the 2008 RAE – a rise of around 16% from the last RAE in 2001 and one of the highest returns of any university in the country.
Specifically, Civil and Building Engineering:
- Ranked 5th in UK for Built Environment and 7th for Civil Engineering in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise#
- 25% of the Department's Built Environment research is classed as 'world-leading' (rated the maximum 4*)
- 95% of the Department's Built Environment research and 90% of the Department's Civil Engineering research is of an international standard (rated 2*, 3* or 4*)
# as classified under the respective Architecture and Built Environment, and Civil Engineering categories, Grade Point Average x Volume.
It also has an excellent record in attracting research funds. Research grant and contract income currently stands at over £4.5m per annum supporting over 150 full time research staff and students.
The department hosts the Centre for Innovative and Collaborative Engineering (CICE), an EPSRC funded Engineering Doctorate Centre, and has been awarded an EPSRC funded Innovative Manufacturing and Construction Research Centre (IMCRC).
The Department is also home for the Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC), one of the world's leading research, education and training institutes for improving access to infrastructure and services for the poor in developing countries.
The European Construction Institute (ECI) is Europe's only transnational network of construction excellence and is also based in the department. It brings together many of the most innovative clients, contractors, specialists and support organisations in Europe to develop and share knowledge aimed at improving the entire construction supply chain.
The Department also hosts the UK's premier leadership Doctoral Training Centre in Energy Demand Reduction and the Built Environment. Funded by EPSRC, the Centre aims to support the training and research of highly skilled and broadly educated energy researchers to lead and support the complex, multidisciplinary task of driving down energy demand and CO2 emissions of the UK building stock.
