What GARNET has accomplished
The level of networking activity has grown significantly since 1993 (the date from which WEDC took on co-ordination), and opportunities for information exchange have increased following the introduction of new topic and country based networks. During the last five years great emphasis has been placed on the following networking activities:
~..
establishment of local network centres (LNC's in South Asia, Latin America and West Africa) as a means to decentralise GARNET's global operations and to encourage operating languages other than English;
.
~..
exploring opportunities to develop new networks of interest (including DECNET; wastewater management);
.
~..
strengthening electronic forms of networking and document delivery (including listservers; Internet websites and electronic conferencing); and
.
~..
disseminating annual newsletters.
Promotional activities include initiatives which are designed to complement information exchange and to generate a higher profile for applied research in the sector in general. The main initiatives include:

promotion of Collaborative Council activities: Highlights from the Collaborative Council's working groups and mandated activities are a regular feature in the bi-annual global network newsletter;

on-going activities: GARNET is currently collating a research database of projects, fieldwork and other references recorded by the GNC from network updates and electronic means of networking.
Between May 1994 and May 2000 GARNET's global network centre recorded: 977 paper based requests for information;
Since October 1995 to May 2000 the GNC recorded 1576 electronic postings on GARNET's own electronic listserver and 127,913 visits to this website.
