Garnet symbol (Global Applied Research Network)
What is GARNET?

GARNET stands for the Global Applied Research Network, an activity that is designed to facilitate the sharing of applied research information between researchers working in the water and sanitation sector throughout the world. The method to achieve this is through informal, low-cost and decentralised networking links. Its main features are:

Global: it links research workers throughout the world, although its concern is primarily with developing countries;

Applied research: it is concerned with research that is, or can be, applied for the benefit of developing countries;

Network: it links institutions and individuals, researchers and programme implementers and industrial and developing countries.

Water supply and sanitation: all aspects, including technology, management, and health and social factors are covered.

How does GARNET work?

GARNET is an information exchange network, that works both globally and with local foci. Network members are drawn from a variety of institutions, including higher education establishments, NGO’s, government ministries, international organisations and consultancies.

GARNET functions through its;

  • Global network centre GNC:
    Responsible for promoting the network globally);

  • Topic network centres TNC:
    Which are based on specific subject themes, and;

  • Local network centres LNC:
    Based in Latin America, West Africa and South Asia, LNC's have been established following recommendations arising from the Barbados Global Forum in 1995.

Local network centres were created as a means to decentralise GARNET's activities to locally appropriate units and to enable wider multi-lingual operation.

The current global network centre is the Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom. Financial support comes through the Department for International Development (formerly Overseas Development Administration) of the UK government.
