GLOBAL WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION ASSESSMENT 2000 REPORT:
"To achieve the 2015 development targets, an additional 2.2 billion people will need access to sanitation and an additional 1.6 billion people will need access to water supply. This means that water supply services will need to be provided to 292,000 people, and sanitation facilities to 397,000 people every day until 2015."

Launch of Iguaçu Action Programme at 5th Global Forum
Better hygiene, more sanitation facilities and safe water supplies are among the goals of the Iguaçu Action Programme (IAP). A four-pronged programme for action in seven regions covering the whole of the developing world was endorsed. These main activities are:
Advocacy promotion and support
Monitoring the implementation of Vision 21 principles and targets
Supporting the establishment of effective regional, country and thematic networks
Dissemination of knowledge and best practice.
The following applied research needs were identified as part of the final activity:
1. People centred approaches
2. Sanitation and hygiene promotion
3. Serving the urban poor
4. WSS in a broader context
5. Institutional management options
6. Resource mobilisation and sustainability
7. Targets, indicators and monitoring

Gender and Water Alliance
The Gender Issues Network or GENNET was active from 1991 to 1997, producing a wide range of materials including reports, newsletters and a participatory gender analysis tool. It was discontinued in 1998, and in its place, the Gender and Water Alliance was created during the 2nd World Water Forum (2000) A total of 110 organisations are presently members with IRC acting as the alliance secretariat. The Alliance is to be responsible for mainstreaming gender within the Council's activities.

DECNET
CASE STUDIES ON DECENTRALIZATION OF WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION IN LATIN AMERICA by EHP
The case studies focus on the effect of reform and decentralization on the less advantaged elements of population in small towns and rural communities. The three themes are:
-Role of small and medium-sized municipalities in service provision;
-Institutional arrangements for backup support to rural systems;
-Effective regulation of municipal services.

World Water Day (22nd March 2001):
The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March of each year as the World Day for Water. This years theme is Water and Health with WHO as the lead agency for the day.
WHO World Water Day web site
A World Water Day web-site was launched in January 2001 in collaboration between IRC and WHO. This provides a wealth of information not only on World Water Day activities but also on related water and health issues and will be updated throughout the year. The URL is www.worldwaterday.org.
Resources on the web site include:
An advocacy guide to encourage partners, international organizations, private companies, governments, NGO's, schools, and the community at large to support World Water Day
Disease fact sheets describe each water related disease and provide the latest up to date information and statistics
Theme articles linking water and health highlight cross-cutting issues such as poverty, war, flooding, infection and human rights
The WHO World Water Day Report aims to raise awareness on the vital links between adequate clean, safe water and health, poverty alleviation, well being and overall sustainable development. This is available in Acrobat pdf format at http://www.worldwaterday.org/news/wwdreport.html
