Departmental Admissons Procedure
We aim to provide students with a stimulating learning environment in which to explore central issues of the modern world. The quality of our teaching was shown in the last Quality Assurance Agency Report which gave us a score of 23 out of 24. The report praised us for, among other things, the high quality of our teaching overall and the excellent record of employment and further study of our graduates. It also noted that our past and present students express “great appreciation of the approachability and helpfulness” of staff.

Open Days
We try to keep things informal and friendly – why not come to one of our Open Days and see for yourself? We put on several open days to give you an excellent opportunity to meet staff and current students, to discuss any individual issues, and have a closer look at the department. You will hear a talk about the department and its degree programmes and be able to visit the student accommodation.

How to apply
Start with UCAS...
Applications for entry to undergraduate programmes at Loughborough University must be made online through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). This applies to all UK, EU and international students. Initial enquiries may be directed to our central Admissions Office.

At a school or college:
Fill in an online application and submit it to a member staff, who will add the academic reference, and submit it online to UCAS.
Independent applicants in the UK
Other UK applicants, who are not at school or college, can apply online independently. You are responsible for paying the correct application fee, obtaining and attaching the academic reference and for submitting the completed application online to UCAS. Advice can be sought from careers organisations, such as Connexions,
International applicants outside the UK, except for those whose school or college is registered with UCAS, individuals from the EU and worldwide can apply online independently. Choosing us
If you put one or more of Loughborough's programmes on your UCAS form, it will be sent by UCAS to our Admissions Office. The Admissions Office discusses all applications with the Undergraduate Admissions Tutor who then considers the details of your application. Applications normally take up to a month to be processed.

Interviews and Visits
In most cases the University makes an offer based on your application form alone. If you live in the United Kingdom and receive this kind of offer you will normally have an opportunity to visit us before replying to the offer.
In some cases the Department will ask you to visit us before we make an offer. This enables you to see the campus, the Department and its facilities. There will be an opportunity to speak to students as well as staff.
Offers of a place
Once the Department has decided it can offer you a place, the University will send you a letter giving the exact conditions of the offer. In particular, it will say what academic qualifications and grades you are going to need. Please note:
- UCAS will also write to you to confirm Loughborough's offer.
- You do not have to reply immediately to these offer letters. You can wait until you have heard from all the universities or colleges to which you applied. This gives you an opportunity to complete all your visits before making a choice.
Deferred Entry
Many students want to take a 'gap' year and put off starting their University studies for twelve months. There is not usually a problem about this. Please note:
- You can include this information on the application form you send to UCAS.
- If you have not included the information on the UCAS form, you should inform this Department of your intention as soon as possible after receiving the offer.
If you take a 'gap year' you do not qualify for any benefits during the year in question, even if you are working for a company that has agreed to sponsor you once you begin your degree programme.
We regularly receive queries from students inside and outside Loughborough University who wish to be considered for a transfer onto one of our degree programmes. For students who are already studying another degree
programme at Loughborough University, all applications must be made using an Undergraduate Internal Transfer Form available by clicking here.
In the first instance, potential applicants should contact Dr Oliver Daddow (Department of Politics, History and International
Relations Undergraduate Admissions Tutor) if they wish to be considered for Year One entry, or the relevant programme director if they wish to be considered for Year
Two entry (see below for the current list of programme directors).
For academic year 2010-11, the deadline for applications is Friday, 28 May 2010. For students who are currently studying for a degree at another university, all applications will ultimately have to be made through the UCAS system.
