About Us

The Department of Physics is part of the Faculty of Science at Loughborough University.

The Department aims to provide an academically stimulating and supportive environment for our students. A small and friendly department, we have an "open-door" policy. As a result, physical science at Loughborough (comprising all courses offered by the Physics and Chemistry departments) obtained the highest overall score of any subject at any university in the country in the 2005 National Student Survey.

The Department offers a wide range of degree programmes. In addition to single honours Physics programmes, leading to the degrees of MPhys and BSc, we have a variety of joint honours programmes that draw on the expertise of Departments from all Faculties of the University, as well as a postgraduate programme in Research Methods in Physics. We are one of a small number of Physics departments to offer the opportunities of industrial placement and study abroad in all our undergraduate programmes.

Research in the Department focuses on condensed matter and materials, with a roughly equal balance between theory and experiment. The large research student population and wide international links make for a lively environment; one of our Visiting Professors, Alexei Abrikosov, was awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physics.
