After graduating from University College London in 1969 in Psychology, I completed my PhD with Hans Eysenck at the Institute of Psychiatry in London. I lectured for three years in the Psychology Department at Queen's University Belfast before coming to Loughborough in 1977.
My research interests and publications include such topics as mental health, personality, personal relationships, organizational commitment, psychotherapy and counselling.
Currently I am an Associate Editor of Psychology and Psychotherapy (2002-) and of the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships (2004-), a Consulting Editor of Individual Differences Research (2003-) and of The Journal of Psychology (2004-) and on the Editorial Boards of Personal Relationships (2001-), the Journal of Rational-Emotive and Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (2006-) and Interpersona: An international journal on personal relationships (2006-) . I have been a past Joint Editor (1995-2000) and Associate Editor (1993-1995, 2000-2001) of the British Journal of Medical Psychology and have been on the Editorial Boards of the British Journal of Medical Psychology (1986-1993), the Journal of Community and Applied Social Psychology (1993-2003), the British Journal of Social Psychology (1990-1994) and Sexualities, Evolution and Gender (2003-2005). I have been Chair of the Books and Special Projects Group of The British Psychological Society (1998-2001) as well as a member (1995-1998). I have also been a member of the BPS Journals Committee (1995-2000).
Ten of my PhD students have been awarded their PhD and I am currently supervising 3 PhD students full-time and 3 part-time.
