Thousands of people gathered at Loughborough University today (3 July) to celebrate the Olympic Torch Relay, as it wound its way through the campus.
The Torch arrived on schedule just before 9.25am, and travelled through the Paula Radcliffe Athletics Stadium, past the Library and Burleigh Court, and through the new Loughborough University Stadium to the Sir Denis Rooke building.
There it was welcomed to the Team GB preparation camp by over 180 members of Team GB’s Olympic Ambition Programme, together with representatives from the British Olympic Association, including Team GB Deputy Chef de Mission Sir Clive Woodward and Olympic Gold Medallists and Team GB Ambassadors David Hemery CBE and Amy Williams MBE.
The arrival of the Torch on campus in the morning had been heralded by the Follow the Light parade, a spectacular carnival procession, which travelled from the Paula Radcliffe Athletics Stadium to the new Loughborough University Stadium. There it was greeted by 1,800 local school children who had come to the University to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime event.
Throughout the day there were a host of other events on campus for University staff to take part in to mark this historic occasion. These included a concert by the University Choir and a ‘traditional’ school sports day.
“This has been a tremendous day for Loughborough University and we are so pleased to have been able to welcome the torch to the campus,” said the University’s Chief Operating Officer, Caroline Walker. “It received a rapturous reception across the University and now we are all looking forward to the start of the Olympic Games.”
Loughborough University is the official home of the Preparation Camp for Team GB in the run-up to the London 2012 Games. All members of Team GB will pass through the University for the 'Team GB Experience' and the official kitting out process.
